Motives for Learning

In an ongoing stream of studies, I probe the underlying reasons that motivate people to learn. I have examined a conceptual framework that identifies four distinct learning motives that vary to the extent that they are intrinsic, extrinsic, and self- or other-directed, and test how these motives alter individuals’ learning and performance in challenging jobs. I also investigate how a person’s learning motivation can be influenced by the actions of others, or by hearing stories of others’ experiences.
